Shipping Used Audio Equipment from China: Costs, Crating and Customs

What actually happens between a supplier in Guangzhou and your venue door: crating options, LCL versus FCL, duties, and the paperwork that stops a container sitting in port.

Freight is usually 8-15% of the total landed cost of a used audio order, and it is the part buyers underestimate most often. Here is how the process works when you buy from a Chinese supplier.

Packing is the first decision

Loose cartons are fine for microphones and small processors. Anything with a wooden cabinet, a rack ear or a display should travel in a crate or a flight case. Ask for corner protection and desiccant: sea freight containers swing between humid and dry, and untreated MDF swells.

For a single subwoofer, expect a wooden crate around 15-25 USD in materials. For a full container, crating is usually included in the quoted freight.

LCL or FCL

Less-than-container-load (LCL) is the default for orders under about 15 cubic metres. You share a container with other shippers and pay per cubic metre. It is flexible but slower, because your cargo waits for consolidation and then for de-consolidation at destination.

Full container load (FCL) becomes cheaper per unit above roughly 20 cubic metres and removes the handling risk. A 20-foot container holds about 28 cubic metres; a 40-foot high cube holds about 68.

What documents you need

  • Commercial invoice with accurate used-goods values
  • Packing list with dimensions and weights per crate
  • Bill of lading, issued after the container is loaded
  • Certificate of origin if your country offers preferential duty
  • For some markets, a pre-shipment inspection certificate

Used goods are restricted in a few countries and need an import permit. Check before you pay a deposit, not after.

Duties and taxes

Most markets charge duty on the CIF value (goods plus insurance plus freight), then VAT or sales tax on top. Professional audio equipment typically falls between 0% and 12% duty depending on the trade agreement and the HS code your broker uses. Ask your broker for the HS code before you order so the quote is real.

Timelines that are realistic

Production and testing: 3-7 days. Crating: 2-3 days. Sea freight to a major port: 18-35 days depending on the route. Customs clearance: 2-7 days. Add a week of buffer for anything that needs an inspection.

Insurance

Take it. Used electronics are fragile in ways that are not visible from outside the crate, and claims without photos taken at unpacking are difficult. Photograph every crate before opening it.

We ship from Guangzhou and Shenzhen and can quote crating together with the equipment. Our Powersoft X4 amplifiers and RCF 18-inch subwoofers are the two lines we crate most often.
