Ranked on measured low-frequency extension, output per cabinet, driver serviceability and how often the model appears in working clubs. Cosmetic condition is not scored, because a sub lives behind a grille.
Two dual-18 cabinets or four single-18 cabinets, placed together rather than spread around the room. Grouping them gives you coupling and a more even low end.
Powered is simpler and cheaper to install. Passive is better when you already own a touring amplifier rack and want one processing platform for the whole system.
Run a 20-120 Hz sweep at moderate level and listen for rubbing, then push each cone gently to feel for scraping. A sub that rattles at 50 Hz will rattle on every gig.
